Fantasy/Science Fiction subgenre stamps! 2/5

High Fantasy: "Swords and Sorcery"-type fantasy; IE, Lord of the Rings, Slayers, etc.

I'm not a huge fan of this subgenre, but eh, it has its merits =P

I wouldn't call high fantasy a sub-genre so much as the original genre. The Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia are, more or less, the godfathers of all fantasy (I mean this in the modern literary way, not counting folk tales, legends, fairy tales, etc) and they're the text book definitions of high fantasy.

Nice stamp, though.

Daimyo Shi is arrogant name, it means Lord of Death in Japanese, I guessing I thought is was cool at the time. Now it simple a name that I have the same attachment as my given name.

This is true. I'm more into Urban and Science Fantasy, so I wasn't quite sure how to define it >_> Mostly I associate it with LotR, so.... ^^;

Oh, I'm definitely an Urban Fantasy fiend these days. But I started out with High Fantasy, and it's the one that's been around the longest of them all, and which most of the other evolved from.
Hell, the creator of the Dresden Files, one of the most popular Urban Fantasy series around these days (with good reason) cheerfully acknowledged that the books resulted from reading The Lord of the Rings. ^^

Oh hell yeah, LOVE The Dresden Files.

I think... wasn't that comment about the Codex Alera though? That's the impression I got from his Author's Notes in the backs of the more recent installments of Dresden.

Harry for Pres 08. *nodnod*

I think it applied to both of them - I'm too lazy to run upstairs and grab Proven Guilty, but if I recall correctly he mentions that the initial version of the Dresden Files was his attempt to try and combine LoTR fantasy with the modern setting.
Either way, they're splendiferous. Can't wait for the previews for Small Favors. (I just finished Dead Beat earlier today, so I'm wondering if we'll finally get the little feud with Mavra resolved)
